About Joan Miró’s Ubu Roi
Miró’s 1966 Ubu Roi, also known as King Ubu, illustrates Alfred Jarry’s play with 13 color lithographs. Exaggerated figures, creatures and vivid colors translate the story into Miró’s visual language. The illustrated book and the separate Suites pour Ubu Roi portfolio have different formats and edition structures.

Paper, Dimensions and Production
Published by Tériade, Paris, and printed by Mourlot, Paris, the lithographs were produced on Arches paper. Book illustrations are approximately 42 × 65 cm unfolded and were issued with a central fold. Separate suite sheets have larger margins, approximately 54 × 75 cm. Check the specific sheet and edition rather than image size alone.
What Affects an Ubu Roi Lithograph’s Value?
Edition format, composition, state, signature status, condition and provenance all matter. For complete books and portfolios, completeness and the survival of original text, wrappers and cases can also affect an assessment. We compare the work with relevant sales from the same edition and state. Read our Joan Miró value guide for more information.

Can an Unsigned Ubu Roi Lithograph Be Original?
Yes. Book illustrations were not individually signed, and the separate suite includes unsigned states. A missing signature alone does not establish that a sheet is a reproduction. The paper, printing, dimensions and documented edition must be assessed together.
