Understanding the 1959 Constellations Publication
Published by Pierre Matisse, New York, with texts by André Breton, Constellations includes 22 pochoir reproductions after Miró’s earlier gouaches. Daniel Jacomet produced the pochoirs under Miró’s supervision. Original lithographs and, in certain copies, etchings accompany them. Contents vary by copy, so completeness must be checked against its edition group.
The 1959 sheets are distinct from the unique gouaches of 1940–1941 and from later reproductions. The 22 pochoirs should not all be described as original lithographs.

Examples of Accompanying Original Prints
These examples show a lithograph and etchings associated with the publication, including an etching heightened with watercolor. They are separate from the 22 pochoirs and are not present in every copy.

Edition and Signature Details
The publication comprised 350 numbered copies, with 22 Roman-numeral copies and 12 hors-commerce copies, for a total of 384. The original lithographs and etchings have their own edition details. Include the copy number and justification page when submitting a portfolio.
Miró and Breton signed the justification page. The pochoirs were generally issued without individual handwritten signatures; reproduced inscriptions, including those on the reverse, should be distinguished from signatures applied by hand. A signed justification does not make every sheet individually hand-signed.
Paper, Dimensions and Catalogue References
The publication is recorded as Cramer Books 58. Documented sheets are on Arches paper, approximately 43.5 × 35.5 cm, with orientation varying by image. Original accompanying prints also have Mourlot or Dupin references. Include available measurements and photographs of the reverse; leave framed works in place for an initial inquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are all Constellations sheets lithographs?
No. The publication includes 22 pochoir reproductions after gouaches, alongside original lithographs and, in certain copies, etchings. Each sheet should be identified by its actual technique.
Can I sell an individual unsigned pochoir?
We consider individual sheets as well as portfolios. An unsigned pochoir may belong to the documented 1959 publication, but the image, paper, dimensions and printing must be checked.
Is my portfolio complete if it contains 22 images?
Not necessarily. The accompanying original prints, text, justification, folders and case must also be checked against the requirements for that copy.
